Description
✈️ FLIGHT SAFETY NOTICE — Compass Interference: The VK-162 GPS module contains USB circuitry that produces minor magnetic interference. Mount at least 12 inches away from your aircraft’s magnetic compass. Glareshield, kneeboard, or side window positions are recommended. Failure to observe this clearance may cause compass deviation. This does not affect GPS accuracy or ADS-B data reception.
The Stratux External GPS (VK-162) provides WAAS-enabled GPS positioning for your Stratux ADS-B receiver. Plug-and-play USB connection — no drivers required. Works with all Stratux builds.
- VK-162 WAAS GPS puck with USB connector
- Plug-and-play — no software configuration needed
- Compatible with all Raspberry Pi 3B/3B+ Stratux builds
- Useful when internal GPS is obstructed by cockpit geometry
- Ideal for metal aircraft where internal GPS lock is slow
FAQ
Q: Will this interfere with my compass?
A: Yes, it can if mounted too close. Keep the VK-162 at least 12 inches from your magnetic compass. USB devices contain components that generate small magnetic fields. This is normal for all USB GPS modules — not a defect. Mount on your glareshield, kneeboard, or side window, away from the compass.
Q: Do I need this if I already have an internal GPS?
A: Not usually. The internal GPS works well in most aircraft. The external puck helps if your Stratux is mounted in a metal-heavy location (like a bag or under panel) where the internal GPS struggles to see the sky. Most pilots in fiberglass or composite aircraft don’t need it.
Q: Why does external GPS sometimes take a long time to lock?
A: All GPS modules need a clear view of the sky. First lock after the unit has been stationary for a while (called a “cold start”) takes 2–10 minutes. Subsequent starts are faster. Tip: always give your Stratux 5 minutes of pre-flight power-on time outside the hangar.
Q: Is this the same as the internal GPS module?
A: No. The internal GPS (part #3047) mounts inside the Stratux case. This unit (VK-162, part #3088) connects via USB and mounts externally. The GPS chipset is similar, but placement changes reception.
